Trutnov - Krkonoše

Trutnov, situated in the Upa valley on the banks of the Upa river and surrounded by forests and farmland is the ideal place to serve as a base while you explore the Krkonose National Park. A district town and the administrative centre for the Krkonose region it was established in the year 1250. Trutnov has had a very turbulent past with few wars passing it untouched. The most important and the most catastrophic being the Prussian - Austrian War that took place in 1866 with some of the bloodiest battles having been fought just out of the town on Jansky (John's) Hill where today there is a monument to the fallen soldiers. Since the memorable days of November 1989, when the citizens of Czechoslovakia had a peaceful revolution to overthrow the totalitarian regime that had stunted its growth for more than 40 years known today as the Velvet Revolution, Trutnov has developed at a blistering pace. Krakonos Square has been revived with many shops, restaurants, outdoor cafes, banks and other businesses. Tasteful re-constructions of the Renaissance and Baroque buildings in the square have flourished and its appearance is something that the towns people can be rightly proud of. Thanks to Trutnov's location at the foot of the Krkonoše Mountains many interesting activities exist for tourists and locals alike. Day trips into the Krkonose National Park for hiking, sporting activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting (in season), skiing and horse riding are all available. And it is not always necessary to leave Trutnov for a good time with many facilities for visitors like the swimming pool, the fitness centre and the ice skating rink. One can cross country ski in the surrounds or down hill ski only 13 km away and the town has many good restaurants, discos and bars only a stones throw from the hotel door. Every August the largest rock festival in the Czech Republic is held in Trutnov and it attracts bands from all over Europe.
